Description
Writing for a Lifetime is The Unique Writer’s high school-level writing course. This course is for novice, emerging, and advanced writers ages 15 – 18+. This is an academic writing course that promotes independent learning in preparation for college, workplace, and lifetime writing skills. Please allow 2 – 3 hours per week to complete assignments.
Class Details:
- Meets on Zoom for one hour once per week for 10 weeks.
- Optional one-hour private tutoring session for each student at the end of each semester (included with the enrollment fee).
- Meeting time: Tuesdays from 9:00 -10:00 AM
- Class fee: $265 per semester, Early Bird Special through June 15. $289 after June 15 – August 15. Registration closes on August 15.
- Dates:
- Fall Semester ~ September 12 – November 14; Scheduled private tutoring must take place between November 28 and December 7
- Winter Semester ~ January 9 – March 19, no class February 20; Scheduled tutoring must take place between March 26 and April 11
Fall Semester:
Critical Reading and Writing Strategies ~ We will begin the semester with a traditional 5-paragraph essay warm-up. Novice and emerging writers who are most comfortable with this format may continue using it. Writers approaching mastery will either be encouraged or assigned word-count and page-length essays, which is what they will encounter in college. This class will help students understand, apply, analyze, and evaluate information through reading classic published essays and responding in class discussions, informal writing journals, and expository, reflective, and persuasive essays. Four total essays will be written this semester, including the warm-up essay.
Take note: The 5-Paragraph Essay Warm-Up will be assigned prior to the first class and due at the first class.
Required text: The Little Norton Reader You may purchase this book new or used from your favorite bookseller. Please make sure that you purchase the linked 2016 edition. Note: this book will be used again in other essay-writing classes.

Winter Semester: Registration for the winter semester opens in November.
Literary Analysis: Students will read, analyze, and respond to classic short stories through class discussion, journals, and formal literary analysis essays. Various elements of fiction will be discussed, including character, plot, theme, point of view, and literary devices Students will practice writing analysis essays focused on a particular element of fiction.
Take note: Students will be required to read the first short story before the first class.
