Writing & Literature

Classes create an opportunity for small group learning in a personalized environment. Discussing ideas, developing strategies, and sharing completed writing assignments enable students to learn from each other as well as the instructor. Classes are groups of 6-10 students.

Students learn to write utilizing the 5-step writing process, naturally developing their skills as they work through each assignment – one step at a time.

Classes are offered in two 12-week semesters in the fall and winter and are grouped by age.
Writing for a Lifetime classes meet for 10 weeks with one private tutoring session at the end of each semester. This session is included in the tuition fee.

Fundamentals of Elementary Writing: Ages 9-12
Foundations of Intermediate Writing: Ages 12-15
Writing for a Lifetime: Ages 15-18

At the Fundamentals level, fall instruction always begins with basic paragraph writing. Lessons focus on narrative and descriptive writing as students learn to create vivid imagery, vary sentence structure, and slowly add paragraphs to develop longer compositions. In the winter, curriculum topics may include literature and writing, creative writing, or newspaper writing.

At the Foundations level, fall semester students begin with narrative essays, then move on to expository and introductory persuasive writing. Winter topics may include additional persuasive writing as well as literary, creative, or research writing. Essays are written using the 5-paragraph essay format.

Writing for a Lifetime offers a comprehensive curriculum that prepares emerging adult writers to communicate effectively in all aspects of life: as college students, employees, and citizens. This course emphasizes mastering and then moving beyond the 5-paragraph essay as students learn to write organically.

Within each course level, a variety of topics are offered. Specific topics are advertised in advance.

  • Writing – essays & compositions, creative writing, research papers
  • Literature – critical reading and writing
  • Book reports (Fundamentals)
  • Introduction to literary analysis (Foundations & Writing for a Lifetime)
